Bailey
is one of those kids, born with a difference. She has an abnormality
known as a cleft lip. Not a cleft palette.
According to the book, "Control of Canine Genetic Diseases"
by George A. Padgett, DVM:
"Cleft palette/lip is polygenic (many genes) but the
mode of inheritance is Undetermined."
Another
cause of cleft palette, in humans as well as animals, is said
to be a lack of folic acid. Suggested dosage is 1.5 mgs at
the least, from first day of mating until 3rd week after whelping.
2.5mgs for first 3 weeks of pregnancy if thought to be a problem.
I will keep this in for future breedings. This makes perfect
sense as I have heard this numerous times in human pregnancy
tips.
